At 3,500 metres, La Paz, Bolivia, is the highest capital in the world. Many roads are in bad condition and accidents are frequent. One road in particular, is considered the most dangerous in the world. On one side there is a sudden drop, which is so great that anyone inside the vehicle is lucky to survive.
But thanks to one man, the death toll (人數(shù)) has fallen.Timoteo Apaza is a man who lives in a village near the most dangerous part of the road, known as "the Devil's Bend".Timoteo has an unusual job — he is a human traffic signal.Every morning he stands on the bend and directs the traffic. When two vehicles approach from opposite directions, they can't see each other, but they can see Timoteo.Actually no one pays him to do the job.Sometimes drivers give him a tip so that he has just enough money to live on.But often they just pass by, taking the human traffic signal for granted.
So why does he do it? Before Timoteo volunteered to direct the traffic, he had been a driver. Then one day he was driving a lorry load of bananas when he came off the road at a bend and fell three hundred metres down the mountain.Somehow he survived, but was in hospital for months. Then, a few years later, he was called out in the night to help pull people out of a bus crashed at the Devil's Bend. This last experience had a profound effect on Timoteo. He realized that he was lucky to be alive himself, and felt that it was his mission in life to help others. So every morning, week in, week out, from dawn to dusk, Timoteo takes up his place on the bend.

At the bottom of the world lies a mighty continent still wrapped in the Ice Age and, until recent times, unknown to man. It is a great landmass with mountain ranges whose extent and elevation are still uncertain. Much of the continent is a complete blank on our maps. Man has explored, on foot, less than one percent of its area.

Antarctica differs fundamentally from the Arctic regions. The Arctic is an ocean, covered with drifting packed ice and hemmed in by the landmasses of Europe, Asia, and North America. The Antarctica is a continent almost as large as Europe and Australia combined, centered roughly on the South Pole and surrounded by the most unobstructed water areas of the world—the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

The continental ice sheet is more than two miles high in its center; thus, the air over the Antarctica is far more iced than it is over the Arctic regions. This cold air current from the land is so forceful that it makes the nearby seas the stormiest in the world and makes unlivable those regions whose counterparts (配對(duì)物) at the opposite end of the globe are livable. Thus, more than a million persons live within 2, 000 miles of the North Pole in an area that includes most of Alaska, Siberia, and Scandinavia—a region rich in forest and mining industries. Apart from a handful of weather stations, within the same distance of the South Pole there is not a single tree, industry or settlement.

The opera house in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is one of the most beautiful in the United States. It is small and open, with one roof over the stage where singers perform and another roof over part of the audience. This opera house in the mountain is one of the best in the country, which may seem surprising because performances are only given during seven weeks in summer, and because Santa Fe is a very small city.

One reason why the Santa Fe Opera is so good is that it attracts many excellent young singers .They all hope to sing in famous opera houses like Metropolitan in New York someday. And they work hard to become well-known during the summer. The musicians and directors are experts who come from the best orchestras(管弦樂隊(duì)) and operas in the country during their vacations. They enjoy working there because they like to live in Santa Fe, which is near both the mountains and the desert. It is very beautiful there in summer.

The state government of New Mexico advertises the Santa Fe Opera in newspapers all over the country, and a great many tourists come to New Mexico because of the opera ,Still ,most of the audience does come from Santa Fe and other nearby cities. And all the seats in the theater are sold for every show.

There is only one thing that some people do not like about the Santa  Fe Opera, and that is the cold weather .Because the theater is open, performances cannot start before it gets dark at nine o’clock in the evening, and then the mountain air becomes very cool. Sometimes people complain about the cold air ,but because the opera is good , these people come back again wearing warm coats.

    Dear Miss Green,

I don’t know if you still remember me. I am Li Hua, the girl who used to let you down. It was your sweet smile that made me fall in love with English. Now I am a senior high school student. English is still one of my favorite subjects. When I was in junior middle school, I liked English very much, but in spite of this, my English didn’t improve a lot. Just when I was going to give it up, you had a talk with me. You said that I should continue working hard and I would be successful sooner or later. Thank you for your encouragement. Now my English is getting better and better. After graduation, I want to major in English at university.

    Yours sincerely,
